Please note: most of this advice is directed at players with older video cards. This will be followed by a section on how to actually make the changes in the menus and from the console. I will go through the things that you need to change first, explaining each one in detail. So that's what this article is about, how to tweak Quake 3 to the point of being competitive with all the other maniacs out there. My current config has over twice the frame rate of the default setup, greatly improved visibility, and is much smoother and more responsive. Sure enough, that made all the difference in the world. So I decided to go back to the drawing board and dig up every possible tweak I could to see if I could improve the situation.
Now I am not a bad player - I have plenty of experience with this type of game and I have the wins to prove it. They were always able to shoot faster and more accurately than me. Well, at least not by humans :) In fact I would have sworn that most of the Quake 3 players I met on-line were using bots. I have never had my ass so thoroughly kicked in any other game. But I have been amazed, since the very first public test, at the level of competition on public Quake 3 servers. I haven't had this much fun with a game since Team Fortress.
